Repeating a phrase or word is something that we all do, especially when writing niche product and category pages. Often, we don’t even realize we’ve repeated ourselves until we proofread our work.
However, repetition in writing can cause the reader to think ‘didn’t he just say that?’ Which can make a piece boring and difficult to read. It can also detract from what you’re trying to say.
As a writer, it can be difficult to notice repetition. As you reread your work, you don’t notice repeated words or phrases, and your brain doesn’t easily pick up on that’ didn’t he just say that feeling. Also, when you’re writing or editing a sentence, you can sometimes add a word that’s perfect for that sentence without realizing you’ve used it in the one before or after.
Fortunately there are a few things you can do to help avoid repeating yourself.
Vary Your Sentences
Repetition isn’t just limited to words and phrases, using the same structure across multiple sentences also causes the same repetition issues. To avoid this type of repetition vary the structure, rhythm and length of your sentences and try to not start them all the same way. Also break up your sentences to avoid run ons, which are a major cause of repetition.
Avoid Using Longer Words
This may not be easy to do depending on the type of content you’re writing. Longer, technical pieces may require longer words. But, whenever possible try to use short and simple common words that everyone can understand.
Use a Thesaurus
Whether you have a printed one on your desk or use one online, a thesaurus is your friend. However, be careful when using synonyms that they don’t change the meaning of your piece. You can also use a grammar checker to help you avoid repetition and suggest alternative options.
Proofread Your Work
Always reread your work before submitting it. This will help you find and fix repetition and other spelling or grammar issues before the item goes to an editor.
